Names of God

In Biblical times names were very important. They revealed a person’s character or expressed the situation or circumstances when the person was born or the expectations of the parents.

“LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!” Psalm 8.1a
The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” Prov. 18.10
“Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I  tell them? God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” Exodus 3.13-1

The Lord is ALL IN ALL. Here are some names of our God that represent His character, His attributes, how He manifested Himself to His people, Israel. And He is the same yesterday, today and forever.

Let me rediscover you

Be a good friend!

God is no doubt our best friend! But He also gives us friends! Our friends are a treasure!
True friendship has a lot with loving and supporting without expecting something in return.
Ruth and Naomi teaches us a lot about friendship!
Starting by the names: Ruth means friend, companion. Naomi  means my joy, my pleasure.
Ruth´s husband was Naomi’s son. So these women were connected by a marriage. Though Ruth had lost her husband to death, she insisted on going with Naomi because of their friendship. She did not want to lose her friend. They were faithful to one another.
Two simple women faced life together, clunging to each other and taking advantage of theirs qualities. Ruth was loyal when she has not to be, and Naomi was clever and far-sighted.
Ruth was a stranger, what counted against her, but she was helped by an older woman to overcome the difficulties she faced. She had the good sense to listen to the advices of Naomi. And Naomi was rewarded by Ruth's  unfaltering loyalty.
Ruth reminds me of many people. Ordinary and young girls and boys, in common circumstances, with problems and concerns as many people.
Naomi was older and experient. She was the one who takes the initiative and gets things done. She was determined, persistent. Ruth felt in safe with her company.
So, after reading the book of Ruth we can think about relationships between people. Which kind of people we need to establish deep relationships: with that do not offer the security of always being on our side or with those who seek to live a full life? There are many unstable people, so absorbed in their problems whose temperament fluctuates all the time. Often, in addition to humor, these people change their minds easily, which can be destructive both for themselves and for those around them. We must be careful! What kind of security we can find in someone like that?
Seek to relate to people who are a blessing to your life.
Watch and pray!
And remember that everyone's best friend is Jesus!
In Him we can trust!
Always!

The power of God's word

The word of God is the Bible itself.
It´s written in 2  Timothy 3:16: "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,"
There are many powers of God's words. Here are some:
1. Power of creation Genesis 1:3 Psalm 33:6-7
2. Power to quench Deuteronomy 8:3, Psalm 119:103
3. Power to purify John 15:3, 17:17
4. Power to bring divine communion John 14:23,
5. Power to set free: John 8:32
6. Inner healing power Romans 15:4
7. Power  to transform Jeremiah 23:29, Hebrews 4:12
8. Power  to save Ephesians 1:13, John 6:68
We can not miss the opportunity of so many blessings!
 Read the Bible every day!

Conditions for Blessings

Solomon had finished the temple of the Lord. He and all Israel celebrated the dedication of the altar for fourteen days. After that, Solomon sent the people to their homes. They all were very happy. Then….
“The LORD appeared to him (Solomon) at night and said: “I have heard your prayer and have chosen this place for myself as a temple for sacrifices. When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place. I have chosen and consecrated this temple so that my Name may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there.” (2 Chronicles 7:12-16 / NIV)
We are God’s people, called by His name, according to John 1.12-13 and I Peter 2.9-10. When we read the text above (God’s speaking to Solomon), we understand that God, as a sovereign God, can “shut up the heavens and prevent rain to fall or allow bad things to happen “among His people”. They will be in need, will lack provision and will be destroyed. It happens to His people when they are proud, conceited, don’t pray, don’t seek His face and continue sinning and disobeying Him. However, He gave the solution, the conditions, to reverse the situation. IF we follow them, He’ll hear us and we’ll reach His blessings.
CONDITIONS:
HUMBLE” – I Peter 5.5b There’s no way out BUT humility: to recognize that we depend on God alone; we are nothing and have nothing without Him.
PRAY” – I Thessalonians 5.17; Jude 20 Prayer is a conversation: talk to God as you talk to a friend; speak and listen to Him as well, at all times.
SEEK” – Isaiah 55.6; Jeremiah 29.13 Take all the opportunities to spend time with the Lord, seeking His presence.
TURN FROM” – Ezekiel 14.6; Acts 3.19 We must stop sinning… repent, confess and abandon any sin; turn from (change direction, position) what is against God's Word and strive to walk in obedience and holiness.
Then, God will HEAR you…. FORGIVE you… and HEAL you
The Lord bless you powerfully!

Indescribable

Overview of the Book of Jonah, Part Five

Finally, Jonah gets to Nineveh ...
In our mind, we can imagine Jonah into the big city, looking fearfully at the sides, expecting at any moment to be recognized and attacked as a Jew.
After walking, crossing the great city, he took courage and began to cry, "Yet forty days and Nineveh shall be overthrown." Jonas continued traversing the great city proclaiming the simple message of repentance and the result was unparalleled in human history! The Word of God says that to the largest (the king) to the least, the people of Nineveh believed the message preached by Jonah, repented of his wickedness and humbled themselves before God! Because of their genuine repentance, God withheld his hand from trial until a later time. History records many years later, the Ninevites went back to their sinful ways and God eventually destroyed the Assyrian empire, but it shows what God can do in the hearts of men. Even in the hands of an individual reluctantly and without enthusiasm, God's message has reached the desired result. On the other hand, the Word of God preached by the most eloquent and dynamic preacher in the world does not achieve anything similar, if the Holy Spirit does not act.
Finally, in Chapter 4, we see Jonah outside Nineveh. Despite having witnessed a tremendous miracle, Jonah's anger by that people continued to overshadow any trace of compassion. Now that his worst fears were realized and God really spared the people, Jonah is angry! However, this preacher is to God like a petulant child.  The hatred of the Ninevites Jonah felt was understandable, considering all the evil they have perpetrated, but what about 120,000 people, not to mention the animals that would suffer if God destroyed the city? Our old, fallen and depraved human nature rarely see the "big picture" because we are selfish and want everything to be done our way.

To meditate:
  • God is a specialist in amazing things as happened in Nineveh! "Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders you have done. The things you planned for us no one can recount to you; were I to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare." (Psalm 40:5)
  • God was not to explain to Jonah, but graciously and patiently explained to him his sovereign will. Nowadays, He reveals His plans to you too. It´s possible! Cry out to Jesus! "Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know." (Jeremiah 33:3)
